Independent Film Review – God’s Soldier

I don’t know if there’s some sort of tax exemption scheme which means it is cheaper to shoot in South East Asia than anywhere else but this is the second lower budget film set and shot in Thailand I’ve seen this week. I was over there in the nineties and it was nice to see the old place again. I can see why though…as I remember it had a whole range of settings from urban industrial through to tropical jungle. That range was available within an hour or so’s drive so I should imagine it’s a location scout’s idea of heaven.

Anyway, God’s Soldier starts off in London. Well, there’s a bit of stock footage of a drone flying over the Thames and the title card says that we’re in London in 2002. After that it’s mainly indoors in a lab or indoors in a bar so we could be anywhere. I’m not sure whether or not I’m getting a bit old and slow, older and slower than I’ll own up to anyway, but I found things a bit confusing in the first act. As far as I can work out there is a child who’s parents were working in the lab in London trying to discover a cure for Ebola Virus.

She Is The Key To Everything

They met different but definite ends; Mum picked up a needle stick injury and contracted Ebola and Dad picked up a high velocity lead injection between the eyes. There are a variety of dodgy rich guys in plush offices and a quite exciting scene when a high tech assassin takes out a bad guy boss. You can tell he’s a boss because he’s almost spherical and surrounded by guys in dark suits. The assassin is in a full camouflage suit of body armour including a full face helmet as well as a few quite fancy toys.

After all that one of the lower rated Baldwin brothers, William I think, starts a hunt for the child mentioned in the paragraph before last. Apparently surviving the fallout of her mother’s clumsy lab practices has given her super blood which will heal anything. Mr Baldwin is a representative of “Big Pharma” and obviously wants any sort of panacea under his control. He is also, allegedly, a former member of the Secret Intelligence Service or MI6 despite blatantly failing to meet any of the residency  requirements. Maybe that’s why they keep referring to it as “The MI6”.

I’ll Take Care Of Everything

Eventually we are introduced to Gina (Carolina Carlsson), a nun with a past. That past includes being a highly trained combat veteran and having a name based on a tortuous acronym. She is quite striking being very, VERY blonde and always having a kind comforting smile. Her opposite number is relentlessly opposite. Sebastian (Chiara Ferrara) has very, VERY dark hair and a permanent cruel sneer. Writer/director Jean-Marc Minéo obviously doesn’t want anyone being led down the wrong path.

So, as mentioned earlier, the first part of God’s Soldier tends to be a bit convoluted and confusing but it’s not long before the action takes over from the narrative. And the action is very well done. Perhaps it’s a bit in the Anna, Lucy, Nikita vein of seemingly harmless women turning out to be ruthless killers so beloved of Luc Besson. His countryman, M Minéo, has an impressive set of martial arts credentials in his own right which he brings skilfully to the screen. God’s Soldier gets a digital release on 16th June 2025 courtesy of Miracle Media.
