The Odyssey: drinking less water isn't the answer — timing it is
The English edition of the article published on cn.runpee.com. See the notes at the bottom for what the Chinese does differently.

《The Odyssey》 opened across the mainland on 14 August. 172 minutes. More than 20,000 screens, including roughly ninety percent of the country's IMAX sites — the first feature shot entirely on IMAX cameras.
And along with it came the advice.
Sohu ran a pre-release explainer telling readers the film has essentially no 尿点 and that they should drink less water and fewer soft drinks beforehand. Sina Entertainment ran the same beat: remember to go before you sit down.
Both are trying to help. Both are giving the wrong answer to a real problem.
Two hundred milliliters is not a plan
Think about what "drink less water" actually asks of you. You are about to spend three hours in a dark room. You have paid for a ticket, you may have travelled across the city, and the recommendation is that you arrive slightly dehydrated and stay that way until the credits.
That is not a solution. It is a tax on the experience — and it doesn't even work reliably. Going before you sit down buys you maybe ninety minutes. 《The Odyssey》 is 172.
The problem isn't your bladder. The problem is that nobody has told you which minutes you can spare.
"No dull moment" and "no moment you can spare" are different claims
The Chinese phrase doing the work in all this coverage is 全程无尿点 — start to finish, not one moment worth leaving for. It is high praise, and for this film we think it's earned.
But notice what it actually says. It says the film never drags. It does not say that all 172 minutes carry equal weight, or that there is no three-minute stretch anywhere in it that you could miss and still follow everything that matters. Those are different sentences.
A good film is not a film with no gaps. A good film is a film that is clearly built — cleanly paced, cleanly edited, easy to step back into. Which is exactly why well-made films tend to have better breaks than bad ones, not fewer. The films that defeat us are the ones cutting between four groups of characters every ninety seconds, and those are hard to follow whether you leave your seat or not.
So we don't disagree with the reviewers. We agree with them, and we add one piece of information they don't have.
What we actually do
Somebody sits through the entire film with a stopwatch.
Not an algorithm. A person, in a seat, in the dark, watching all 172 minutes and marking the windows where you can leave for three or four minutes without losing the plot. Then they write two things down:
- A cue — something you can recognise in the dark without checking a screen. For 《The Odyssey》, the timer's cue is the Universal logo fading out. You start the timer at that moment and the app knows where you are for the rest of the film.
- A synopsis — what happened while you were gone. You get it when you come back, so you're not the person leaning over asking.

The rule the whole thing is built on is simple: imagine a friend sitting beside you who hasn't seen the film. Would you tell them to go now? If the answer is anything short of yes, it isn't a Peetime.
For this film specifically
- Runtime: 172 minutes. Our grade: A.
- The timer cue is the Universal logo fading out. Not the start of the ticket time, not the trailers — the studio logo, right at the top of the film itself. That gap between when your ticket says the film starts and when the film actually starts is the single most misunderstood thing about using RunPee, and it is usually fifteen to twenty minutes long.
- There is nothing after the credits. We checked. So when the credits roll you are free to leave, and if you wait you'll be waiting about seven minutes for nothing.
- The Peetimes themselves — how many, when, and what happens during each — are in the app.
If you can't install from an app store
Mainland Android users can't reach Google Play, so there's a web version that runs in a browser with nothing to install: runpee.net/app. Same Peetimes, same timer.
