Movie Review – The Odyssey

Please help promote the RunPee app by sharing our content.

I’m going to call this the Beta Review. That’s because I have to try to watch the movie and find Peetimes at the same time, and the Peetime part takes precedence and can be distracting. I’m going to see The Odyssey again tomorrow/Saturday just to enjoy it with my wife. After that, I can give the movie a proper review.

Initial Thoughts

I want to start by commending Matt Damon for accepting the role as Odysseus. I’m going to state it plainly: Odysseus is the most famous mortal fictional character. I’ll grant you that there’s an argument for Robin Hood and Hamlet. And I wouldn’t laugh at you if you argued for Romeo, who is the only one of the three competitors whose name can be used as a noun. But the tale of Odysseus and his journey was written about 2,800 years ago, and at the time of the writing, the story was already 500ish years old. Playing a character as iconic as Odysseus opens the actor up to immense criticism, not just from the normal film critics, but also from critics of literature. That is bravery.

Did Matt Damon actually pull it off? Yeah, I think he did. Again, I’ll have more to say after I watch the movie and can actually focus on it, but I think Matt was pretty solid in the role.

I’m tempted to say that Christopher Nolan also deserves kudos for attempting something as challenging as The Odyssey, but this is just another movie for him. He doesn’t know how to make a normal/easy movie. I do wonder what he’s going to take on next. The Iliad, maybe?

Got this back when I was pregnant, but I'll be keeping it forever, it's just so handy. I don't go to the movie theater that often (even back before quarantine when you actually could...) but I make sure the app and the movie list are all current and updated, cause it's so handy! It's great for running late cause you can read their summary, obviously awesome for bathroom or snack breaks mid movie, and I also love that it tells you if there's anything after the credits which is very handy.
