Movie Review - Buddy

“Buddy” is demented, bizarre, and kind of ridiculous… and I absolutely loved it.

Buddy is a big orange unicorn—almost exactly like a certain purple dinosaur named Barney from the children’s show of the 1990s. His program is nearly an identical copy of that one: kids singing songs, dancing, playing, and generally adoring their host.

And Buddy is almost like Barney… except he’s a narcissistic, controlling monster.

I really don’t want to go into any more detail, because you need to leave your brain at the door and walk into this horror film—yes, horror film—with no expectations of what’s coming.

The director and co-writer of Buddy is the same person who made the Adult Swim short “Too Many Cooks,” a bizarre take on ’80s sitcoms that gradually turns into a horror piece. If you’ve seen it, you’ll recognize the mix of laughs and shocks here. If you haven’t seen it, you must YouTube it right now.

I’m a little embarrassed to say how much I enjoyed this; I laughed and laughed throughout.

Remember BUDDY—the bright orange unicorn and star of that classic children’s television show who brought joy and life lessons into your living room? Inside the colorful world of “It’s Buddy!”, a group of children spend their days singing, dancing, and helping Buddy spread happiness. But when one child refuses to play along, Buddy is not pleased and cracks begin to appear in this seemingly perfect world.
