Movie Review - Bottoms
This is the kind of movie that defies any traditional review because it's not a conventional movie by any means. It is supremely subversive and intelligent. I hope, I really truly hope, that there are more movies like this made by daring writers/directors who try to not only tell different stories but tell them in a different way. We should all hope that Bottoms is financially successful and encourages the investment needed to make more like this.
There is a lot of great humor throughout this movie, and in particular, Marshawn Lynch makes a laugh in every scene he's in. If there were one thing I wish they could have done in this movie it would be to have cast Pete Carroll, Lynch's former coach with the Seahawks, as the school principal. That would have been ridiculously funny.
This isn't a movie that requires amazing acting to be effective, but at the same time I never saw a single actor in any scene that didn't feel like they were deeply in touch with their character. It's really great to see so many young actors who can't have all that much experience do such a great job. Any time every actor does a great job in a movie a lot of credit must be given to the director for helping them. Kudos to Emma Seligman. I hope we'll be seeing a lot of her work in the future.
