Movie Review – Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

Picture it, 1970. Mrs. Judy Blume publishes one of the most iconic pre-teen books ever written. Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret. She was able to create a story that would touch the heart of every young girl that read it.

I remember I was in fifth grade and picked that book during library time. As I read the book it felt like Judy was directly talking to me. All the questions that I had about what my body was doing, how I felt trying to fit in at school right down to the smallest thing of not wearing socks to silently protest. I didn’t know what I was protesting but she knew. She knew the mind of a pre-adolescent better than I did. When I found out that a movie was in the talks, I was ecstatic. I couldn’t wait to see the story unfold on the big screen.

I was front and center at the opening show with my popcorn, candy and soda. I was transported right back to fifth grade. It was awesome. I wasso happy with the retelling of the story that I applauded. There were probably around fifteen people in my theater and every single woman around my age clapped. I knew exactly what they were feeling. Hollywood nailed it.

If you read this book at any time during your life and sympathized with it, I highly recommend watching the movie. They did the book justice. It’s not often they do them according to what is in the book and their interpretation of it sometimes misses the mark. That’s not the case here. Take some time for yourself and watch your childhood favorite brought to life.

Movie Watching Must Have!!

I go feral for this app. I love it so much and I wish everyone knew about it and used it. It is incredibly useful and I would be devastated if this app ever disappeared. Things I love: 1) the pee times! It’s so handy to know the best time to go and then read the synopsis of what’s happening while I’m gone. I never have to worry about missing the good bits! 2) knowing if there is a post-credits scene or not. This might be my fav feature because I would have missed out on some pretty critical scenes if it weren’t for RunPee. 3) the movie review and viewer rankings. This info has made me watch some movies that I normally wouldn’t and it’s nice seeing things outside of my usual scope. 4) that it’s a small family run business. I love shopping small and it really does feel like I’m part of the RunPee family! If you reach out to them, Dan will personally respond to you and he is so warm and helpful. Plot
Margaret Simon is just eleven going on twelve when her family moves from New York City to Farbrook, New Jersey. Margaret’s mother is Christian and her father is Jewish. Margaret has been raised without an affiliation to either faith, and does not practice an organized religion, although she frequently prays to God in her own words, beginning by saying, “Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret.” She is beginning to feel uncomfortable with her lack of a religious affiliation. For a school assignment, she chooses to study people’s religious beliefs, hoping to resolve the question of her own religion in the process. Part of her study involves attending different places of worship to better understand religious practice and also to see if one of them might be right for her. She enjoys spending time with her Jewish paternal grandmother, Sylvia Simon, who loves her as she is, and hopes Margaret will embrace Judaism after taking her to her synagogue for Rosh Hashanah services.
