Movie Review – A Quiet Place: Day One

A-quiet-place-day-one_hero

If you’re going to make a disaster/horror/monster movie this is the way to do it. The original The Quiet Place was brilliant in its execution and scope. The movie dropped us into a reality that the characters were at home in, and the audience had to pick up the clues to understand. It was gripping. The Quiet Place: The Road Ahead continued the story, picking up immediately following the events of the first movie.

If someone like Michael Bay were in charge of this then The Quiet Place: Day One would have been a sprawling epic that would follow the events of the story from the point of view of the President and top generals, and probably a group of soldiers on the ground as they adapt to the situation, and maybe throw in a few civilians who join the soldiers. The movie would probably run about 2 1/2 hours and would have been filled with action and suspense, but little else.

Thankfully, we got a Day One movie that is similar in tone to the originals. There is no wide scope of the events. The only thing the audience learns about the origin of the apocalypse is what a single lady learns during her trip to New York City. Kudos to the creators for staying true to what made the original movie so successful.

Acting

Lupita Nyong’o is fantastic. There was never a moment in the movie that I noticed her acting. It felt like I was watching real events unfold as the camera magically followed her. All of her reactions were genuine and never too much over the top. I think it was a brilliant choice to tell the story through the eyes of a character who has spent the past few years coming to terms with their own inevitable death. We learn in the movie that she has already outlived her diagnosis, but she’s in pain and has prepared herself to die. Her struggle isn’t to survive. She already knows that’s not an option. She just wants to get pizza.

Joseph Quinn was also great in his role. The very first time I saw him was in Stranger Things. Every time I see him I see a young Robert Downey Jr.

Grade: B

About The Peetimes: This is a short movie, so I only found two Peetimes. Both are pretty good so you shouldn’t have any problems.

One of the most useful apps I’ve ever come across. I’ve used it for years and recommended it to all my friends. Even if I’m not the type to have to pee during movies often, being able to pull up the app and pass my phone to my mom/friend/grandma so that they know when to go to the bathroom has been invaluable. Because then I don’t have to summarize anything when they get back!!

Great movie! And I agree with you in everything… except that Michael Bay was actually involved in this movie. He’s one of the producers.

    1. LOL, no way. That’s funny. I wonder what his input into the movie was.

Great movie but one issue. The cat. No way in hell does someone open a can of cat food and not have them demandingly do their “Meow! Meow! Meow!”

    1. LOL, I know. I was thinking the same thing. That was a crazy quiet cat. 🙂
