Dinner and a movie – that’s one of the classic date combos. It’s popular for a reason. Dinner is ideal for getting to know one another, and there are plenty of romantic possibilities if you choose the right movie. Even if the date is mediocre, you still get to enjoy a film. But, let’s be honest. The typical multiplex experience isn’t very exciting. So, why not try a creative twist on the standard movie date? Try some of these alternatives!
A Movie Date Under The Stars
Who wants to be stuck in a dark, stale theater when the weather’s so nice? Instead, enjoy an outdoor movie date. You’ve got several options to choose from.
The World’s Most Indispensable Movie App
The RunPee app tells you the best times to

- Use a projector and screen in your backyard or favorite camping spot – These are often on loan from your local library
- Check with your local parks district or city events calendar for movies in the park
- Open-air cinema – Pop-up or permanent venues that screen movies outside
Boutique Theater
Boutique theaters offer a unique, often elevated take on the standard movie theater experience. While boutique cinemas offer a variety of experiences, here are just a few amenities that are most common:
- Comfortable seating
- Table service
- Selection of beer wine and spirits
- Themed events
- Partnerships with local restaurants and microbreweries
Best of all, the people who patronize these theaters tend to be movie lovers. So, you’ll be spending your evening with people who are less likely to talk over the dialogue or be disruptive otherwise.
Drive-In Movie Experience
Drive-in movie theaters hit their peak in the 1950s, and unfortunately there are just over 300 in operation today. If you are fortunate enough to live near one of these historic places, you should definitely schedule a date there soon.
Drive-in movie theaters offer an experience that you just can’t get anywhere else. They’re also quite cost-effective. For one price, you often get a double or triple feature, inexpensive concessions, and the ability to bring along your own food and snacks.
Don’t worry about the poor audio quality you may have experienced in the past at these landmarks. Most can provide sound through your car’s FM stereo or an audio app.
Private Viewings
Did you know that you can book a theater for a private viewing for yourself and a group of friends? This is something that gained a lot of traction during the pandemic and is still a wonderful option, especially for group dates. When you book a private viewing, you get a theater just for you and your friends. Many private viewing packages also include food and beverages.
What people are saying
about the RunPee app.
This is a great app. I wish more people would support it
This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!
Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.

If your local multiplex doesn’t offer this, don’t give up. Expand your search to smaller theaters, community centers, libraries, and universities. These places often have facilities available for private watch parties. They may also be able to help you find the specific movie you want to screen.
Do you love the idea of renting out a theater, but lack the friend group to make it worthwhile? There are dating and social apps to help you connect with movie areas right where you live.
Sidenote: Some cinemas also rent out theaters for gaming parties.
Final Thoughts: Get in on The Action
Do you and your partner love movies enough to get in on the action? That doesn’t have to be a dream unrealized!
Did you know that at any given time there are thousands of films in production? No, not all of them are destined to be the next blockbuster. Some are destined for student film festivals, niche streaming channels, and art houses.
Many of these films are low-budget, and they have something in common. They need extras, and they usually recruit those extras locally. So, if you’ve ever wanted to take part in a film shoot, your opportunity could be as close as the gigs section of your local Craigslist or industry websites like Backstage.
Don’t miss your favorite movie moments because you have to pee or need a snack. Use the RunPee app (Androidor iPhone) when you go to the movies. We have Peetimes for all wide release films every week, including Moana 2, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Kraven the Hunter, Wicked, Gladiator II and coming soon Mufasa: The Lion King, Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown and many others. We have literally thousands of Peetimes—from classic movies through today’s blockbusters. You can also keep up with movie news and reviews on our blog, or by following us on Twitter @RunPee. If there’s a new film out there, we’ve got your bladder covered.
