Barbie was one of the pop culture hits of 2023. Before it came out, I don’t think anyone knew what to expect. After it came out, many people didn’t know what to think. It certainly broke expectations by a wide margin, especially the expectations of women. You can see in the chart below that Barbie scored significantly higher across all age groups, for both males and females. Apparently, no one disliked this movie. But some liked it a lot more than they expected.
Analysis
- The first thing that stands out is that women had a higher expectation and final rating across all age groups, with the exception of the 50-59 age group, where men rated the movie just a tiny bit higher—86.95 to 86.7.
- Men in the 20-29 age group had a slightly higher difference between expection difference than women—5.3 for men vs 5.2 for women. But for every other age group women’s expectation difference was higher than men.
- 60+ women had a lower expectation than their male counterparts, yet their final rating was 14.5 points higher than expectation. That’s the biggest gap across all age groups and genders.
- The 60+ age group had the lowest expectation for both men and women. It was also the age group with the largest difference between expectation and final rating, with the exception of the 30-39 group for men.
- Young women had the highest expectation for the movie, and then expectation decreased just a little bit for each successive female age group.

What people are saying
about the RunPee app.
This is a great app. I wish more people would support it
This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!
Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.
