Restored Film Review – Supervixens

And so we come to the second part of Russ Meyer’s Vixen trilogy…Supervixens. As before, Mr Meyer has made a film playing to his strengths. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune he said “I’m back to big bosoms, square jaws, lotsa action and the most sensational sex you ever saw. I’m back to what I do best – erotic, comedic sex, sex, sex – and I’ll never stray again.” His previous two films had both flopped at the box office; The Seven Minutes was a straight drama about censorship and Black Snake was a blaxploitation film. As a result he made what he described as a “sort of sequel” to his 1968 hit Vixen!.

Vixen! featured a voluptuous lead with an insatiable appetite for making the beast with two backs as our Elizabethan forebears would have put it. There was one other similarly endowed actor in that film so where was Mr Meyer going to go with the follow up? Well, if one is good, two must be better, and loads must be absolutely fantastic! Perhaps not loads but I suppose half a dozen isn’t too bad. For some reason best known to Mr Meyer they all have names beginning with “Super”: SuperAngel (Shari Eubank), SuperSoul (Uschi Digard), SuperLorna (Christy Hartburg), SuperCherry (Colleen Brennan), SuperEula (Deborah McGuire), and SuperHaji (Haji).

How Does My Beautiful Body Look Today?

What happens in Supervixens? The opening credits show a tow truck carrying a VW Beetle along a desert road. When it gets to the garage we see a woman in a car while a man is filling up her petrol tank. The man is Clint Ramsey (Charles Pitt) and he is married to SuperAngel. SuperAngel is insanely jealous, attention seeking, demanding, and, like most of Russ Meyer’s female characters, sexually insatiable. She phones Clint up and overhears another woman (SuperLorna) chatting him up which sends her into a jealous rage. When Clint gets home there is the inevitable argument causing Clint to storms off and a neighbour to phone the police.

The policeman, Harry Sledge (Charles Napier), arrives driving a car but wearing a motorcycle helmet. SuperAngel is taken to hospital and Clint goes off to a bar. Later Harry comes back to check on SuperAngel and she sets about seducing him. Unfortunately Harry is unable to perform and this leads to an argument, which leads to a fight and this ends badly for SuperAngel. Harry sets about covering up the evidence and trying to put the blame on Clint who is drinking in a bar operated by SuperHaji. Her dress code seems to consist of a few stick on flowers and jewels,  and some paint.

Dynamite Baby, Dynamite!

From here on Supervixens becomes a chase film with Clint on the run and Harry in pursuit. Hindering Clint’s progress is the “fact” that he is either irresistible to women or that every woman he meets is a raging nymphomaniac. These include SuperCherry who he meets while trying to catch a lift, SuperSoul who is a mail order bride from Austria, and SuperEula who is the deaf daughter of a motel owner. Eventually Clint meets SuperVixen (Shari Eubank). However, SuperVixen is a friendly and giving reincarnation of SuperAngel whose ghost keeps popping up. Also popping up is Harry who is determined to kill off Clint and SuperVixen.

So Supervixens is a fairly thin story spread over a hundred and six minutes of screen time. It does get inexplicably surreal for the last forty minutes or so but still manages to squeeze in more than its fair share of larger than average breasted women with no tops on. Ultimately though, that is what Russ Meyer was best known for. He liked big breasted women, he was in charge, and that is what you see. I can’t help but think that his target audience was adolescent boys and like minded men. Supervixens is part of the newly restored Vixen trilogy released on 20th January 2025 by Severin Films.
