Movie Review – The Uprising

I couldn’t connect with this story, and for any historical story that is essential. And that’s a shame, because the acting, the atmosphere, the little historical details, all worked well. It’s just the story that is told doesn’t give the characters room to grow on screen. The only real growth comes in the first and the last scenes, and neither one shows an emotional transition.

Connected to the place

Where the movie works is in projecting the slowness of the time. If you want to march on London, you literally have to walk. None of the commoners have a horse. Getting from one side of a river to another is an arduous, time-consuming task. Adding the bonfire as communication is a nice touch, especially since I just rewatched Lord of the Rings last week and the lighting of the beacons to call the Rohirrim to battle is a classic. This is just like that, except it’s one bonfire to signal people on the other side of a river. (So not like LOTR at all, but still a nice touch.)

Historical Accuracy

I have no question that on the grand scale, this movie is accurate. There was an uprising, they marched on London, some of the king’s advisors met with the wrong end of an axe, the king betrayed them. Sure, those things happened. But was young Richard II tormented by dreams, did his mother disapprove of his actions, was there really a rebellion living in the woods afterward?

Just a little research reveals that this is all at best speculation and much of it is outright fantasy. And that’s the worst kind of historical movie.

This app is the best wingman for a movie goer, especially when you have to go. It even has a vibrating timer that is spot on for those 'go times' some of us need! There are many other features that are wonderful. It even lets you know when the kill scenes are coming up for the people and animals for those who may have sensitivities to that type of content. The staff go above and beyond!
