Movie Review: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

perfume-the-story-of-a-murderer_hero

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, directed by Tom Tykwer, is an adaptation of Patrick Süskind’s novel of the same name. This cinematic piece is a dark and twisted tale set in 18th century France, following the life of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a man born with an extraordinary sense of smell but no body odor of his own. His journey from the slums of Paris to the perfumeries of Grasse is marked by his obsession with capturing the ultimate scent, leading him down a path of murder and madness.

The film masterfully captures the essence of Grenouille’s olfactory world, bringing to life the scents and stench of 18th-century France. Among the myriad fragrances explored in the film, the oud scent stands out as a particularly intriguing element. Known for its rich, complex, and somewhat mystical aroma, oud plays a crucial role in conveying the depth of Grenouille’s obsession. The film’s depiction of Grenouille’s encounter with this scent highlights his almost supernatural ability to discern and recreate fragrances, setting the stage for his ultimate descent into darkness.

The Cinematic Craftsmanship

“Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” is visually stunning, with meticulous attention to detail that immerses viewers in its historical setting. The film’s production design, from the grimy streets of Paris to the vibrant fields of Grasse, is both lush and oppressive, reflecting Grenouille’s internal turmoil. The use of lighting and color palettes further enhances the atmosphere, with dark, muted tones contrasting sharply with moments of vivid, almost surreal beauty.

Ben Whishaw’s portrayal of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is haunting and compelling. He brings a quiet intensity to the role, capturing Grenouille’s eerie detachment and single-minded pursuit of the perfect scent. Whishaw’s performance is supported by a strong cast, including Dustin Hoffman as the flamboyant perfumer Giuseppe Baldini, and Alan Rickman as Antoine Richis, the protective father of Grenouille’s final victim.

The film’s score, composed by Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, and Reinhold Heil, is an evocative blend of orchestral and choral elements that perfectly complements the narrative. The music swells and recedes with the plot’s twists and turns, adding an additional layer of emotional depth to the story.

Themes and Symbolism

“Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” explores themes of obsession, identity, and the nature of beauty. Grenouille’s journey is driven by his desire to create an ideal scent that captures the essence of beauty and love, even as he remains incapable of experiencing these emotions himself. His ability to manipulate and control through scent raises questions about the power of perception and the often thin line between admiration and horror.

The film also delves into the idea of dehumanization, both in how Grenouille views his victims and how society views him. His lack of personal scent symbolizes his lack of identity and humanity, making his quest to create the ultimate perfume an ironic attempt to attain something he can never truly understand.

“Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” is a darkly mesmerizing film that successfully translates the sensory richness of Patrick Süskind’s novel to the screen. Its exploration of scent as a narrative device is both innovative and disturbing, making for a unique cinematic experience. The film’s strong performances, particularly by Ben Whishaw, combined with its striking visual and auditory elements, create a haunting portrayal of one man’s descent into obsession and madness.

Single best investment

By and far best investment Ive made. I used to drive my husband nuts because Id be a fidgeting mess the last half hour of the movie trying not to miss important parts. Now I just turn this app on and *bam* I can actually focus on the movie the whole time. Even puts alerts to my watch so even better. Also I can guarentee all the 5 star star star star star reviews arent fake as one person accused – its just that so many of us movie-goers had the same problem and this fixed it. Yes, it is paid but jeeze its expensive to keep watching movies and updating an app for every movie. And if you read more about the creator he mentions he has several people contributing – so yeah its paid but omg worth every cent. 10/10
