Mother Mary is such a weird, hard-to-pin-down movie. Is it a psychological drama? A dark musical? A horror flick? Honestly… yeah, it’s kinda all of those at once.
The basic story sounds pretty simple: a pop star who’s having a bit of a nervous breakdown tracks down her old costume designer because she only trusts her to make a new look for a big performance. There’s a lot of bad blood between them, and they have to work through it.

But don’t be fooled: this is nothing like some glossy Sabrina Carpenter “getting ready for tour” movie. It gets really dark, really fast. There’s a ton of supernatural stuff woven in that takes the film to another level.
Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel are both fantastic. Hathaway does a solid job playing the spiraling pop star, but Michaela Coel absolutely steals the movie. She’s incredibly intense, chews up every line, and you can’t take your eyes off her.

It doesn’t totally stick the landing in the end, but I was hooked the whole way through. It’s a strange, moody, atmospheric ride that stays with you.
