It’s starting to feel like they’re milking this franchise for all the money they can get from it without offering anything substantially new. Rise of Gru doesn’t come close to Despicable Me or the first Minions movie back in 2015. (No way, it was that long ago?)
I think the best thing I can say about the movie is that it’s only about 80 minutes long, if you include the extra scene early in the end credits. So at least they didn’t drag it out. What they do have is the requisite antics that the youngsters will enjoy. They just didn’t leave a lot for the adult audience to enjoy, other than a few songs here and there.

I recognized Alan Arkin’s voice as Wild Knuckles right away. And Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow stood out. I would have enjoyed the movie more if I’d known that Danny Trejo, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Lucy Lawless were also voices for some of the Evil 6 gang. But they didn’t have too many lines anyway so no huge loss.

About The Peetimes: I have two good Peetimes. I tried to avoid using any scenes with the Minions antics that children most want to see.

Brilliant idea with great information
I’ve been using RunPee for a few years now and it’s basically a requirement of going to the movies for me. The best part of course are the “pee times” that give you cues, synopses and times for when you can pee without missing the most important parts of the movie. There is also information about the credits- length, extras and if there are any extra scenes at the wayyy end. Super helpful to just know that it is or isn’t worth staying. There is a timer function that will buzz your phone when it’s a good time to pee. I also appreciate that the app is very conscientious about it being an app you use in a theater- dark background, all silent alarms etc. I will always enjoy the experience of the theater even if I could watch things at home- but I’ve even used it at home to check for things like after credit scenes or other information too.

Plot
In the heart of the 1970s, amidst a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru (Steve Carell) is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making back-up from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto – a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please – deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons, and pull off their first missions. When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member. It doesn’t go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.
