Movie Review – Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice_hero

Going in, I had moderately high expectations. It started off rough with a few clunky scenes, but then it got better. I enjoyed most of the middle part of the movie. But then, as it went on, it went off the rails. By the end, I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

The Good

Michael Keaton didn’t disappoint. At least they got that much right. He fell right back into this wacky character as if Beetlejuice was released just last year. That was great to see Mr. Juice back in action. The script provided him with enough to work with that he had a few funny lines. The audience did laugh a few times. That’s about it’s only saving grace.

The other actors did a good job with their roles.

I like how the story matures the relationship between Lydia and her mother, Delia. That much of it worked. And OMG, Catherine O’Hara is 70! She looks great.

The Bad

There needs to be a name for stories that exist just to try and create memorable scenes without adding anything to the actual story. It’s like watching an action movie and wondering why the characters are behaving the way they are. The answer is so that they can force another fight scene into the movie. But in this case they’re forcing another bizarre scene in the hopes of producing a laugh. Every now and then it landed, but not often enough.

Toward the end the plot just falls apart. The boyfriend thing gets resolved in a way to abrupt way. As if the writers got to the last act of the movie and wondered how they were going to address the boyfriend thing and just flushed it down the toilet.

And then, there was the wedding song scene. Oh, my, gawd. How long did that go on? I’m not exaggerating that halfway through the scene I thought it was already embarrassingly long, and yet it just kept going.

It’s not often that I see a movie so poorly edited that it stands out. But it did here. Again, in the wedding song scene there was an abrupt cut that was broken. Like how on earth did that get past quality assurance?

Single best investment

By and far best investment Ive made. I used to drive my husband nuts because Id be a fidgeting mess the last half hour of the movie trying not to miss important parts. Now I just turn this app on and *bam* I can actually focus on the movie the whole time. Even puts alerts to my watch so even better. Also I can guarentee all the 5 star star star star star reviews arent fake as one person accused – its just that so many of us movie-goers had the same problem and this fixed it. Yes, it is paid but jeeze its expensive to keep watching movies and updating an app for every movie. And if you read more about the creator he mentions he has several people contributing – so yeah its paid but omg worth every cent. 10/10

Grade: C-

About The Peetimes: This movie jumps from one short scene to another, which makes it hard to find good Peetimes. I managed to find two good ones. I had one other, but it turned out to be rather critical to a later event so I had to cut it out.

There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Plot
From critically acclaimed filmmaker and screenwriter, Tim Burton presents the long-awaited sequel to the Halloween classic. Keaton’s action-packed comedic demon returns to the silver screen for more mischief than ever before. When the Maitland house EXPLODES, so does the fun, so buckle up. The original cast and crew plus new additions return when Beetlejuice is found homeless in the netherworld. He takes it upon himself to travel back to the mortal world seeking comfort, only to find the Maitland house has blown up due to a gas leak. Leaving our beloved characters without a humble home to share the love. In search of guidance, the crew travels down to the Netherworld only to find there’s a new sheriff in these parts, The Jersey Devil (Will Arnett). Through a surprising turn of events, the self-known ladies man, Beetlejuice learns that the Jersey Devil is his long-lost son through one of his numerous love affairs. Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) is wood by the enchanting Jersey Devil, desp ite being married to a struggling real estate agent (David Harbour). Through kooky scenarios and ecstatic characters, the fun near stops. Though entertaining it is also a heart-wrenching tale that shows Beetlejuice is just another man trying to find his way in the world. The story also progresses the idea that a family is never truly ideal. The story continues when you say the release date three times unbroken.
