During summer blockbuster season there just aren’t many movies released. That’s because each blockbuster is going to show on multiple screens at theaters for many weeks, sometimes months. There just aren’t many screens left over for small-budget movies. But starting in early September that ends and there’s plenty of screens available for new movies each week. While they may not have the publicity and budget of movies like Oppenheimer, Barbie, or Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 that doesn’t automatically mean they won’t have the same quality.
Here are a few movies that aren’t getting much attention, but nonetheless look interesting.

I can’t wait for this movie. It’s based on the real-life events of 2020 when day traders upended some Wall Street hedge fund managers who were betting on, and causing, companies like Game Stop and AMC Theaters to go bankrupt.

Boy is this a timely movie considering all of the buzz that ChatGPT and other machine learning algorithms have gotten this past year or so. This movie takes place in the near future where humans and robots are fighting for their existence. What I’m most excited about is that writer/director Gareth Edwards has created some epic movies, like Monsters, Godzilla, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Water drinkers unite
Run pee is the best app for people who find themselves needing to pee a lot but also not wanting to miss any action. The app gives you the best times to use the bathroom during a movie while also telling you when to leave and which lines to listen for! It not only gives you the time you should go pee, but it also explains to you what is happening during the break. I helped I use this app every time I go to the movies now. My god father recommended this app to 5 years ago and it’s been in my phone ever since! Highly recommended.

This one looks… Well honestly, it looks pretty bad. But it has Morgan Freeman so it has that much going for it. I don’t have a lot of hope that this movie will break any new ground, but it is interesting that they’re combining time travel/revenge and the opioid drug crisis in the plot.

Action Comedy
This movie looks completely ridiculous, but I think that’s the point. John Cena does this role really well, which is good because it’s about the only role he can do. But there’s nothing wrong with that. No one ever criticized Tom Brady for not being a great on defense. I’m not saying that Cena is as good at comedy/action as Tom Brady is at quarterbacking. We’ll maybe as good as Brady was in 2022. 🙂

Comedy/Drama
I think Paul Giamatti is one of the best actors of his generation. He reminds me a little of a slightly younger Richard Dreyfus. I’m going to hold out hope that this movie can be as touching as Mr. Holland’s Opus. This movie is directed by Alexander Payne who has directed some really thoughtful character-driven movies: Nebraska, Election, and Sideways.
