Movie Review - Wild Horse Nine

Movie Review - Wild Horse Nine
I’ve been looking forward to Wild Horse Nine for months. Martin McDonagh wrote and directed it, and it’s a dark comedy about two CIA agents on Easter Island. The cast is full of some of my favorite actors, so I walked in with high hopes. I’m happy to say it didn’t let me down.
I went with Runpee Mom, and that made the night. She’s the master of deep-meaning movies. She picks up on the underlying tone and the hidden messages. I’m more of a “let’s see some blood and guts” moviegoer, so she patiently filled me in on everything that sailed right over my head. She’s also the one in our row with hearing aids, and I still kept leaning over to ask her, “What did they just say?” Yes, I was asking the hard-of-hearing person for help. I honestly don’t know what I enjoyed more, the movie or watching it with my mom.
Now for my one gripe. This is a dialog-heavy movie, and I missed a lot of John Malkovich’s lines. The tone and delivery of his voice made some of them hard to make out. It wasn’t the sound mix as much as the way he delivers them. So here’s my tip: when it hits streaming, turn the subtitles on. I’m going to, because I want to catch everything I missed.
It was also much sadder than I pictured. That surprised me, and it’s what gives the movie its depth. Add in the incredible acting from these masters of film, and I loved it.
If you want a little action and a lot of conversation, give it a try. Just bring someone smart to sit next to you.
