Movie Review - Wicker

Wicker

This is a wildly creative story that explores human psychology in fascinating ways. And I know this looks like an A24 movie that could end up going to really dark places, but it isn’t. First, it’s a Black Bear production and maybe it goes to some shadowy places, but nothing that is horrific. All in all, it’s a fun movie that will make you think.

The movie has an R-rating, but I’m struggling to think of why.

Acting

The performances are all great. The actors all have great characters to work with and obviously good direction from the duo of Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer.

Olivia Colman is charming and plays a likeable and eccentric character. It’s easy to simultaneously feel sorry for her character yet admire her at the same time.

Alexander Skarsgård is robotic in just the right way. (Which is also funny because he plays a robot in Murderbot. Actually, these two characters are rather similar.)

Setting

The setting is wonderfully enigmatic. The story takes place in a rustic village and it could take place 100 years ago or a thousand. There’s no way to tell. Nor is there any hint of the location, aside from the actors’ accents which as far as I could tell seemed to be from all over the place. Plus, the ethnicities are radically mixed.

Dialog

I wish I could have watched this movie with subtitles on. Some of the dialog comes fast and mumbled, and I could barely make out a word of it. The only two characters that I could perfectly understand were Basket Weaver—Peter Dinklage—and of course Wicker Husband—Alexander Skarsgård.

Psychology

This would be a great date movie for a couple. There’s plenty to discuss afterward. Although, with a word of caution, if you’re not in a good place in your relationship, this might make it worse.
