Movie Review – Verity

verity

Last night I walked into Verity completely blind, and I don’t mean that in a good way. Nobody told me it was based on a book. I’m a book-first girl, so I sat there in the dark with a head full of questions and no one to answer them. It was a delicious kind of torture, and I’m still not sure whether I liked it.

It’s a slow burn, one of those movies that leans in close and whispers when you want it to just say it already. Something is wrong in that house. You feel it in the long looks and the quiet, and in the way every secret seems to be holding its breath.

Dakota Johnson is here as the shy, sultry girl, and I’ll admit it: I love her. Fifty Shades of Grey is a favorite of mine, and I was addicted to those books. But I kept thinking, “Haven’t I met this girl before?” Is there more to her than that smoldering, wide-eyed thing? I honestly don’t know. I need to watch more of her movies and find out.

And then there’s Anne Hathaway. I’ll be honest, I was shocked she took this role. This is the queen of The Devil Wears Prada, and this part felt minor next to the heavyweights she’s done. I kept wanting more from her. I’d have loved to see her really sink her teeth in.

Must have app if you love the movies

If you’re like me and enjoy a 92oz soda as part of the movie experience, you’ll be thankful for this app telling you the best times to go for a quick break. Whether that’s to refill your soda or recycle it.

Possibly an even better feature is the info on if the movie has after credits scenes. There’s nothing worse than sitting there reading about who the key grip was, then finding out that’s all you did. I blame Marvel for the stupid trend.

Seriously, I see a dozen movies a month and use this app every single time. Worth every Penny of the infinity coin thing I bought.

So where does that leave me? On the fence, with one foot dangling over each side. The slow burn never quite caught fire, Anne Hathaway deserved a juicier part, and I walked out with more questions than answers. Maybe the book holds the answers, so I’m going to read it, and then I’ll come back and tell you whether the movie earned its seductive little secrets.

(I’ll revisit after the book)
