I can describe this movie in five words: Steven King meets Jurassic Park.

I’ve been looking forward to The End of Oak Street since I saw the first trailer, and it did not disappoint. This is easily the best dinosaur movie of the past decade+, and yes I’m including all of the Jurassic World crap movies.

And it just got better because I just noticed the movie title uses antanaclasis. I didn’t know I could love this movie more than I already do.

What’s scarier than a T-Rex?

A mother protecting her children. Anne Hathaway nailed it. All of the actors did, young and old alike. But Anne Hathaway was in another world. This is a movie that demands a lot from the actors. There’s a lot more going on here than just acting terrified. There’s one scene with Anne that was so good, I wanted to press rewind in the theater and watch her over and over. I can’t tell you which scene, because… SPOILERS. But I feel like you’ll know it when you see it.

Brilliant idea with great information

I’ve been using RunPee for a few years now and it’s basically a requirement of going to the movies for me. The best part of course are the “pee times” that give you cues, synopses and times for when you can pee without missing the most important parts of the movie. There is also information about the credits- length, extras and if there are any extra scenes at the wayyy end. Super helpful to just know that it is or isn’t worth staying. There is a timer function that will buzz your phone when it’s a good time to pee. I also appreciate that the app is very conscientious about it being an app you use in a theater- dark background, all silent alarms etc. I will always enjoy the experience of the theater even if I could watch things at home- but I’ve even used it at home to check for things like after credit scenes or other information too.

Making the Unbelievable Believable

I’m a big science nerd and I can’t help but look for scientific inaccuracies in a movie. So it thrills me when a movie like this comes along that does something science-fictionally without trying to explain it one little bit. In the first three minutes, we get a tiny little background mention over the radio of strange ripples in space that baffle scientists. That’s about all the exposition we get for how this happened. It’s not about that. It’s about how a family copes with such a fantastic situation.

Family Dynamics

It isn’t just dinosaurs trying to rip the family apart. The family itself is struggling to stay together. The writer does a great job of exposition that tells us what’s going on inside a character’s head without actually telling us. It was brilliantly done.
