It’s no surprise everyone keeps bringing this up. You’re scrolling, you see your friend in a world, someone mentions PS Plus, and boom — your brain connects dots that aren’t there, and now you’re convinced Mojang’s just giving it away. Let’s clear this up — because the answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no, and plenty of players have been burned by assuming wrong.
So, is Minecraft actually free on PlayStation?
Not by default, that’s for sure. If you actually hop onto the PlayStation Store, it’s like twenty bucks. It’s been around that price for years. No hidden free version, no limited freebie tier — just a straightforward purchase.

That said, is Minecraft free with PlayStation Plus? Sometimes, yeah. Sony rotates games into the PS Plus monthly lineup, and Minecraft has shown up there before. But here’s the catch — once it rotates out or your subscription lapses, you lose access. So calling it “free” is a stretch. You’re really renting it through a subscription you’re already paying for.
Here’s a breakdown of what you can and can’t access without buying the game outright:
What people are saying

Love love love this app. And, after receiving an email from Dan (the creator) that read as though it was a one-on-one communication sent only to me, I felt compelled to leave a long-overdue review. My son and I are absolutely addicted to this app...especially since I discovered it at the onset of the Marvel craze. Now we use it to confirm if there is a scene following the credits. Often times, we are the ONLY ones there watching the bonus scene...and it cracks us up. LOL! Thanks, RunPee!

- PS Plus Monthly Games — Minecraft has appeared here, but there’s no schedule. It comes and goes whenever Sony decides.
- No demo on PS4 or PS5 — Mojang doesn’t offer a trial version for PlayStation. Mobile and PC users have gotten limited trials before, but not PlayStation.
- Family Library — If someone in your PlayStation household already owns it, you might be able to play through sharing. Worth checking before you buy.
And get this — apparently, Minecraft’s pulling in over 212 million players a month. That’s not a game struggling to find an audience, which is partly why Mojang hasn’t felt pressure to offer it for free.
The PlayStation Plus question — what you need to know
Whether Minecraft is free with PlayStation Plus really comes down to when you check. The thing is, Sony doesn’t tie any particular game to PS Plus permanently. It’s always rotating.
If by some miracle it shows up in your PS Plus tab, do yourself a favor and claim it before they change their minds. It doesn’t matter if you’re not hopping on tonight. It lives in your library forever as long as you’ve got PS Plus.
And you know the Shigeru Miyamoto rule — ‘A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.’ And Minecraft’s the perfect example — came out in 2011, and here we are in 2026, still getting updates like it’s brand new. That consistency is part of why the price has never needed to drop.
If you’re planning to play with friends online, running a multiplayer world takes some setup. A lot of players look into free Minecraft server hosting 24/7 to keep their world online all the time without leaving a PC running. Useful to research before you fully commit to the game.
What Microsoft and Sony’s track record actually tells us
When Microsoft bought Mojang back in 2014, they paid $2.5 billion. That price tag alone tells you Microsoft isn’t in a hurry to give the game away for nothing.
And the numbers back that up. By 2024, Minecraft had already moved over 300 million copies. Clearly, it doesn’t need a free price tag to get people playing. It already has them.
Is Minecraft free on PlayStation in any official capacity? No. Is Minecraft free with PlayStation Plus? Technically yes, but only while you’re subscribed and only when Sony includes it in the lineup — which isn’t guaranteed.
Here’s what to actually do
Stop waiting for Minecraft to randomly become free. It probably won’t. Check PS Plus monthly, watch for sales, or buy used.
Games aren’t just entertainment. They’re experiences. And Minecraft’s one of the biggest out there. Even at full price, it’s probably the best value in the store. A little patience and timing can save you ten bucks, though, and that’s worth knowing.
