Movie Review – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Let me start by saying that I’m not a big Harry Potter fan. I’ve seen all of the movies and thought they were okay. But I haven’t read any of the books. And I’m a huge Lord of the Rings fan – both of the books and movies.
I must confess that I didn’t like Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at all. I’m not saying it was a bad movie. It just lacked anything to get over the hump of being average.
The most notable failing is the acting/directing. There are very few scenes where the actors have any expression other than a dower expression of impending doom or feeling dejected over their inability to form a relationship with the ones they really love. And there’s hardly ever a smile, or quirky expression of playfulness. In only a few scenes during the movie did the audience laugh out loud.

Since impending doom is the flavor of the day, throughout the movie they should have worked with it by getting more closeups of the actors in anguish. But the camera seems to always be far enough away that we don’t feel the actors. We only see them. I never felt any connection to any character at all.
The first hour-and-a-half or so of the movie is also filled with many short choppy scenes, with hardly any connection from one to another. It’s as if they decided to film a few pages of the book here and there without alluding to what was skipped over. But I’ve found all of the movies, except the first one in this series, to have a similar flow. If it didn’t bother you then then it won’t bother you now.
Lastly, the music was completely underwhelming. Where’s Hans Zimmer when you need him? 🙂
Ultimately, this movie seemed like it was put together from scenes from a great movie that fell on the cutting room floor.

Hi Shanti and thanks for commenting. We look for things that can be easily summed up for our PeeTimes, not whether they are good or bad scenes per se. It’s harder than you’d think to make a good PeeTime. 🙂

@Shanti, my like or dislike for a movie has no bearing on the PeeTimes I choose. It’s all strictly based on what can be described in the synopsis. I felt that the first PeeTime was a crucial point in the movie but it’s pretty easy to clue the viewer in, “Harry gets his advanced potions book…Someone pretty smart had it before him we just don’t know who” That’s pretty much it, right?

Your 5th pee time is very badly timed. If anyone plans on going to see the 7th movie, then this part sets up the whole basis of that movie. It is very important if you plan on following it through the series.
Other than this review, i have enjoyed this website for some time now!

@Rachel, really? The 5th PeeTime with the spider? I thought that was perhaps the best one.
When I add voting and such it will help others communicate which PeeTimes they would suggest. I think that will help a bunch.

The movie was ONE OF THE BEST in my opinion. I did take a short snooze, ironically at the last pee, during the spider/Hagrid’s hut scene. I just couldn’t help myself since the chairs were TOO comfy along with the darkness from the movie/theater. My snooze lasted about the 4 minutes which was all I needed. I read all the books so I knew what I had missed, and didn’t feel too bad. I would love to see it at the IMAX in 3-D, which I believe is the ultimate way to watch it. The Order of the Phoenix was incredible at the IMAX when I saw it, and I believe this one will be just as good, if not better!

I don’t think the runpee time at 105 minutes is good.
Professor Slughorn will tell Harry about a beautiful story of a magic fish and Lily. I have to say that this is one of my favorite scene.
So girls should not miss the 105-minute part-
@Lesley, there are many technical challenges to running this site but I think you touched upon the most crucial and difficult aspect of managing RunPee. You’re right, someone could use that PeeTime and not realize until later that they really wish they had seen that. And the only way to know is to read the PeeTime synopsis beforehand which is no good.
Ultimately I think RunPee helps solve the problem of what to miss if you must go to the restroom. However it isn’t perfect. Still working on that though.

Lesley, some movies don’t really have ANYTHING you can miss long enough to get out to the bathroom. You need like four minutes, which is a long time to find.
Which is a good thing, ultimately, if a movie is so good there are no decent PeeTimes. We have to pick something, though. At the least, a PeeTime is something that can be ‘summed up’ readily. 🙂

movie was dull as hell. There’s a PeeTime at 105 mins as Lesley noted, it’s not good at all. That’s actually the funniest part of the movie, if you go pee don’t use this time! IMO the only part worth seeing is from 1:40 to 2:10
“Harry and Hagrid and Professor Slughorn stand there in front of a large spider which was Hagrid’s pet. Prof. Slughorn gets a vial full of the spider venom “purely for academic purposes” and then offers to say “a few words”.

@Rocko, It’s hard for me because I’m not a Harry Potter fan. So I don’t know what people will like and not like. I think a good rule of thumb that we’ll use when we have lots of people doing PeeTimes is to make sure that the person really likes the movie. When you don’t like the movie it’s hard to pick out just which scenes make good PeeTimes.

I’m glad I didn’t go during Aragog’s funeral. It was a very entertaining moment for me. But, I am a huge Potter fan. I went right before Harry & Dumbledore left to look for the horcrux on the island. I couldn’t wait any longer & after reading the book I felt I knew what was happening & wouldn’t miss any humorous dialogue. I thought it was one of the best Potter adaptations,even though (as usual) they can’t keep it true to the book or each movie would have to be a mini series.

I disagree with your pee-time completely, that part was by-FAR my favorite part, Daniel Radcliff acted hilarious and made the whole movie. The group of friends I was with and I laughed (out loud!) at every word he said. 🙂 I wished he could be like that during the entire series! 😀 PLUS – it was a big part of the plot. not to be missed 🙁

@Addison, I think that really proves my point that it’s very difficult to make good PeeTimes for a movie if you don’t actually like the movie. It seemed like a good one to me. But then, I don’t particularly care for Harry Potter. In time we’ll have a well rounded group of people paid to do these PeeTimes – besides me, my wife, my sister and mother. 🙂

well i just want to say i am a very big fan of harry potter and i feel some of the comments are a bit unfair, i think each movie has fantastic scenery for a start and the acting is what you would expect in Harry Potter movies, being a true fan, i guess you may not get what i mean, i would not have any “pee time” throughout these movies, as i wouldnt miss any parts of them!
