Contagion – a PSA and movie review

If you want to rewatch John Carpenter’s The Thing, or The Revenant, it’s best to wait for a cold windy winter night. At the other end of the spectrum, Jaws is best enjoyed on a warm summer night. Unfortunately, now is the best time to watch/rewatch the movie Contagion.
I just rewatched Contagion last night. After watching a few news reports about the Wutan virus outbreak in the Chinese province of Hubei, Contagion plays more like a dramatic reenactment than science fiction.
What makes the movie Contagion so dramatic is that it’s not overly dramatic. This isn’t a virus that wipes out half the world population. There’s no bleeding from the eyes, no walking dead. However, director Steven Soderbergh manages to turn an everyday scene in a coffee shop into the horror movie equivalent of the young coed pulling back the shower curtain.

The story does a good job of weaving between how the disease progresses on a global scale, while giving attention to how common people respond.
Additionally, there is some good medical advice dispersed throughout the movie:
- Cover your mouth when you cough.
- Wear a mask that makes a tight seal over nose and mouth — we got ours — and in the case of the Co-Vid 19 virus, wear goggles.
- Don’t touch your face when you’re in public.
- Wash your hands frequently.
- If you’re sick, then quarantine yourself as best you can.
- And most importantly, homeopathic remedies are a con.
- Antibiotics don’t work on viruses! (That bit wasn’t in the movie. I just thought I’d throw that in for good measure. They only work on bacteria.)
Contagion has an outstanding cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, Enrico Colantoni, Elliott Gould, Marion Cotillard, et al.
Grade: B+
About The Peetimes: I would suggest using the middle Peetime at 40 minutes into the movie. A lot of that is a music montage and the only thing important that happens during this Peetime was shown in the previews.
There are no extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Contagion. (What we mean by Anything Extra.)

When will you see fit to use the mask? Are you getting goggles?
This is an old movie, right? Can one Netflix it?
One of my favorite films is Outbreak. Is it like this at all? I like disease movies and this one has a great sounding cast, but don’t know why I haven’t heard of it. (Like Colassus).

We’ll start using our masks in public if there are in cases in North Carolina, or in any bordering state. I expect that will be Atlanta or DC. Asheville isn’t exactly a travel hub. And yes, we got goggles. I can use them for lots of things, not just viruses. 🙂
Contagion came out in 2011, so it should be on some streaming services.

Hmmm. There are many bordering states to NC: SC, TN, GA, VA. And the ocean, but that doesn’t count for much. WV and KT are close by.
Here in CA there’s Mexico, AZ, NV, and OR. (Also the ocean.) And apparently people are being transferred to quarantine in Mira Mar and Ontario from overseas…which is extremely close to here.

Of course, all it takes is one plane ride to create a local Patient Zero.
I just saw my GP to see about travel to Brazil in March. My Dr said the masks are only helpful if you are already sick, to prevent passing it to other people, and that masks would get contaminated within a few hours and become quickly useless if you aren’t sick. She suggested surgical gloves at the airport/plane flight.
I think the hard part is not touching public things and then your face/mucus membranes. I think i am always touching my face. Bad habit that could kill me someday.

I think your doctor might need to catch up on disease prevention. Yes, the masks help, but the right masks. We have N99 reusable/washable masks. And yes, these masks are really best for PM2.5 particles, which viruses are MUCH smaller than that, but the virus isn’t floating around in air by itself. It’s in water droplets, which are easily caught. Viruses don’t survive on cloth surfaces very long — the do lasts longer on smooth surfaces which is the opposite of how bacteria operate. Bottom line, are masks going to be 100% effective? No. But much much better than not having a mask.

That makes sense. Maybe she was only thinking about the cheap surgical masks. You have ones making a facial seal and has filters.
And as for glasses: protecting the eyes from droplets is huge, I would guess, if people are coughing and hacking around you.
I already have people giving me the side eye for using Clorox wipes around my seat and taking Airborne. I can only imagine if people see me on my flight in gloves, masks, and goggles. But that’s their problem.
