Fleeing Spain

Mia and Nico find themselves in an economic crisis in Spain that has made it difficult to acquire basic commodities. They are worried about their security and also fear for their unborn child.  Their unborn child is a beacon of hope, having previously lost their daughter Uma when she was captured by the military.

Mia blames herself for the loss, and the cloud of guilt hovering over her is the driving force to flee to a better place. Nico hatches a plan that will see them escape Spain in a cargo ship headed to Ireland. However, what awaits them is beyond imagination; they get separated, leaving an expectant Mia to face the dangerous voyage on her own.

Love love love this app. And, after receiving an email from Dan (the creator) that read as though it was a one-on-one communication sent only to me, I felt compelled to leave a long-overdue review. My son and I are absolutely addicted to this app…especially since I discovered it at the onset of the Marvel craze. Now we use it to confirm if there is a scene following the credits. Often times, we are the ONLY ones there watching the bonus scene…and it cracks us up. LOL! Thanks, RunPee!

Helpless at Sea

She finds herself stranded in the middle of nowhere after a storm sweeps the containers into the water. From here, Mia faces various perils as she holds on to dear life in a shipping container. Her determination to protect her unborn child enables her to hold on to hope, even though everything seems bleak and she has no idea if help will be coming.

As water seeps into the container, Mia has to keep pumping it out to remain afloat. She struggles to find food under these circumstances. One of the most pitiful scenes in the movie is when Mia eats raw fish to keep herself alive.  She’s also forced to stitch a gaping wound on her leg, and her pain is evident.

Eventually, Mia has to move to the top of the container as it fills with more water than she can pump out. The film takes a distressing yet ironically hopeful turn when Mia delivers her baby on top of the container.  Threatened by starvation, the new mother eats her own placenta, leaving viewers reeling in shock.

Mia is delighted when she receives a call from Nico. However, her happiness is short-lived as Nico informs her that he’s nursing a gunshot wound and is unlikely to survive. Of course, she’s overwhelmed with the news but gathers the courage to inform him that she’s given birth to their daughter.

Knowing very well that this is their last conversation, Nico encourages Mia to keep on fighting for their daughter and urges her to continue on the journey to Ireland. The tears flow freely as he promises to always be present in their lives in spirit.

Solitude and Hope

Now Mia has accepted that she is alone and has to do whatever it takes for her and her daughter’s survival. Realizing that the container is sinking, she hastily makes a raft and drifts at sea with no hope in sight. At some point, Noa drifts out of her mother’s sight in the dark, leaving her in anguish.

Luckily, Noa lets out a loud cry when a passing whale splashes water on her face, and Mia locates her. However,  Mia is struggling to hold on to hope, and, at some point, it feels like she has resigned to fate. She makes peace with her past and accepts that losing her eldest daughter was not her fault, acknowledging she had tried her best.

Mother and child are still in a precarious situation, with Mia holding on to the makeshift raft. They separate again, but this time, an Irish boat spots the infant and rescues her. Soon enough, they discover her mother, who has drifted out of consciousness, and bring her onboard.

Mia’s in a bad state, and the Irish sailors put in a lot of work to resuscitate her. Luckily, Mia and her daughter come out of this harrowing voyage alive and are taken to shore, where the promise of a better life awaits in Ireland.

Release and Reception

Audiences from all over the world watched the movie “Nowhere” for the first time on the 29th of September 2023. Some viewers have pointed out the scenes in the container and the ever-present vast waters as monotonous and claustrophobic.

Perhaps this brings out the genius in director Pintó as it is evident he’s managed to bring out the isolation and helplessness Mia experiences.

Another scene that viewers found questionable is how Mia’s phone was still on, and she could receive a call from Nico in such dire circumstances. While it may seem improbable that Mia held on to her phone even after the storm, the functional phone symbolizes hope and how a small gesture like a call can encourage an individual to remain optimistic.

Overall, audiences applaud the film for its minimalistic approach. With only two main characters and a single setting for the better part of the movie, it’s remarkable that the innate human determination to survive shines through. All unnecessary elements are thrown out of the picture to allow the audience to connect and feel the desperation of a mother determined to make it out of an impossible situation.
