Godzilla End Credits Song Remix By Serj Tankian

Blue Oyster Cult is probably most famous for their song Godzilla.  It’s a must if you want to set the mood for seeing Godzilla: King of the MonstersBut, better yet, give a listen to the remix by Serj Tankian that plays in the movie as the credits roll.

Queen – You’re My Best Friend Video & Lyrics from Shaun of the Dead

shaun of the dead does don't stop me now by queen
Shaun: David, kill the Queen!
David: What?
Shaun: The Jukebox!

The classic zom-rom-com Shaun of the Dead features not one, but two Queen songs in their wonderfully amusing British zombie film from 2004. Don’t Stop Me Now is definitely the better showstopper, but You’re My Best Friend is a great end track. If you haven’t seen this fantastic movie (it’s not scary — I promise!) then get ready for a super duper fun treat…something along the lines of Zombieland, but with better music and more sharp Brit cleverness.

I mean, for seriousness, take a look at Shaun playing video games at the end with his best friend, in his ”Man Shed” at the denouement. Is this any different than a slacker’s typical afternoon? Looks relatively normal to me.

Nothing has essentially changed  in their central connection, and that is the ENTIRE point of the movie.[pullquote] We’d be so lucky to have such a closeness in our lives, even if our buddy might bite us by accident.[/pullquote]

Enjoy this end credit scene and the lyrics beneath:

Lyrics from You’re My Best Friend

(Song by Queen, 1976)

Ooh, you make me live
Whatever this world can give to me
It’s you you’re all I see
Ooh, you make me live now honey
Ooh, you make me live

Oh, you’re the best friend that I ever had
I’ve been with you such a long time
You’re my sunshine and I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
Oh, you’re my best friend

Ooh, you make me live

Ooh, I’ve been wandering ’round
But I still come back to you
In rain or shine
You’ve stood by me girl
I’m happy at home
You’re my best friend

Ooh, you make me live
Whenever this world is cruel to me
I got you to help me forgive
Ooh, you make me live now honey
Ooh, you make me live

You’re the first one
When things turn out bad
You know I’ll never be lonely
You’re my only one
And I love the things
I really love the things that you do
Oh, you’re my best friend

Ooh, you make me live

I’m happy at home
You’re my best friend
Oh, you’re my best friend
Ooh, you make me live
You’re my best friend…

Edge of Tomorrow – Lyrics and Video to Love Me Again – A Kickin’ Action GroundHog Day Themed Movie

emily blunt and tom cruise in edge of tomorrow - live die repeat - lyrics for love me again
How can you NOT love them again? I am all verklempt.

Live. Die. Repeat.

A lot of people know Edge of Tomorrow only by the above tagline, and they’re not far wrong: this Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt adventure slash sci-fi slash action flick ticks every box of awesomeness anyone could want for an evening of movie fun. It doesn’t hurt that Cruise and Blunt know their craft and have the filmographies to prove it.

RunPee reviewed Edge of Tomorrow here, but we heartily recommend you do a personal re-watch before February 2, the  (frankly bizarre) American holiday Groundhog Day, since it’s got the same ‘repeating day” theme, and executes it almost flawlessly.

The theme song Love Me Again is rousing and sort of a an earworm, albeit a worthy one. Here’s the Edge of Tomorrow song video, followed by the lyrics so you can sing along.

We recommend this tune for any wake-up or work-out playlist. You’ll enjoy having this one back on your radar, so enjoy, and you’re welcome:

Lyrics to Love Me Again

(by John Newman, 2013)

Know I’ve done wrong,
I left your heart torn
Is that what devils do?
Took you so low,
Where only fools go
I shook the angel in you

Now I’m rising from the ground
Rising up to you
Filled with all the strength I found
There’s nothing I can’t do!

I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?

I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?

I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?

I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?
Can you love me again?
It’s unforgivable,

I stole and burnt your soul
Is that what demons do?
They rule the worst of me
Destroy everything,
They bring down angels like you

Now I’m rising from the ground
Rising up to you
Filled with all the strength I found
There’s nothing I can’t do!

I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?
I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?

Can you love me again?

I told you once again,
Do this again
Do this again oh lord

I told you once again,
Do this again
Do this again oh no

I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?
I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?

I need to know now
Know now, can you love me again?

Can you love me again?
Can you love me again oh no

Can you love me again?

A Stomping Good Time at the Tournament – Video and Lyrics to We Will Rock You from A Knight’s Tale

Health ledger in a knights tale with Queen - We will rock you
He will rock you.

When Brian May told his group members in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody he wanted the audience to be the instrument for one of their rock songs, I realized just how brilliant the rest of the band was: it’s not all about the immortal Freddie Mercury. All these men had something special, and the glorious anthem We Will Rock You is one absolutely genius result.

Even in high school, my drama club used to play We Will Rock You in the green room while we all stomped and sang to get psyched and ready, pre-performance. It was perfect to get us in the mood. And we see this same trick used to the same effect in A Knight’s Tale, pre-tournament, to get the audience excited for a great day of games. [pullquote]This is one of the more creative uses of a diegetic (ie – heard within the context of a story) song in any movie ever.[/pullquote]

Stomp along with the brilliant Knight’s Tale opening scene below until you make the Earth shake! (Lyrics are below if you want to bellow along too.)

Lyrics to We Will Rock You

(Music by Queen — 1977)

Buddy, you’re a boy, make a big noise
Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday
You got mud on your face, you big disgrace
Kicking your can all over the place, singin’
We will, we will rock you
We will, we will rock you

Buddy, you’re a young man, hard man
Shouting in the street, gonna take on the world someday
You got blood on your face, you big disgrace
Waving your banner all over the place
We will, we will rock you, sing it!
We will, we will rock you, yeah

Buddy, you’re an old man, poor man
Pleading with your eyes, gonna get you some peace someday
You got mud on your face, big disgrace
Somebody better put you back into your place, do it!

We will, we will rock you, yeah, yeah, come on
We will, we will rock you, alright, louder!
We will, we will rock you, one more time
We will, we will rock you
Yeah…

One of the most unique things in A Knight’s Tale is the wonderfully weird use of modern rock tunes in a story facilitated by Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany, on top of his game) himself.  I can’t see this fun film enough times. What do you think?

Greet the Morning with Groot – Mr. Blue Sky Video and Lyrics

baby groot in guardians of the galaxy dancing to mr blue sky
The cutest dancing tree in the galaxy.
One of the most memorable scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the opening credits, as the adorable Baby Groot dances to ELO’s hit song “Mr. Blue Sky.”

What makes this scene so engaging is Groot’s complete obliviousness to his team mates-slash-parents’ danger as they fight a seriously deranged space monster. The Guardians get beat to hell as Groot grooves along, manically chases space rodents, and  then waves to Gamora mid-fight. Gamora kindly takes the time to say, “Groot, get out of the way! You’re going to get hurt. Hi!” in between blasting at the nasty tentacled slime beast. It’s a hoot. You can’t beat this stuff. (I’m SO going to miss James Gunn by the time we get to GotG Vol 3.)

I wrote a previous article about how the first song on my daily morning playlist is Deadpool’s fabulous opening scene, set to Juice Newton’s Angel in the Morning. Now I’m writing to report Mr. Blue Sky always follows on the heels of that softer tune, and gets me ready to dance around and greet the day.

Here’s the absolutely precious opening scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for your viewing enjoyment. Why can’t all movies be this much fun?

These are the lyrics to Mr. Blue Sky, so you can sing along while Baby Groot does his joyful boogie:

Mr. Blue Sky

(Electric Light Orchestra – 1978)

Sun is shinin’ in the sky
There ain’t a cloud in sight
It’s stopped rainin’ everybody’s in a play
And don’t you know
It’s a beautiful new day, hey hey
Runnin’ down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
On the streets where once was pity
Mister blue sky is living here today, hey hey
Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race
A celebration, mister blue sky’s up there waitin’
And today is the day we’ve waited for
Oh mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there mister blue
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Everybody smiles at you
Hey there mister blue
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Everybody smiles at you
Mister blue sky, mister blue sky
Mister blue sky
Mister blue, you did it right
But soon comes mister night creepin’ over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind I’ll remember you this
I’ll remember you this way
Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there mister blue
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Everybody smiles at you

Best Rock, Pop Songs in Non-Musical Movies

Thor Ragnarok Immigrant Song
A man with his own theme song.

If you love movies, you’re probably an aficionado of films using rock or pop hits in their stories as well. You can put this mental connection to good use if you run playlists on Alexa/Google Home/cell phone/whatever, loading it up to play songs evoking your favorite films. Use the lists all day long, to wake you up, get you ready for the day’s work, psych you for a workout, or keep you going through a long night of studying.

For example: you can make morning playlists to wake you softly…and then more insistently, by starting with Deadpool’s Angel in the Morning, and moving on to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2’s Mr. Blue Sky.

Some films have a soundtrack with either 1. a piece of music tonally inappropriate to the scene at hand, and it is glorious (Again, see Angel in the Morning), or 2. a rockin’ Earth track to underscore how cool a scene is (as in Thor’s Immigrant Song). I’m not going to include music like ABBA from Mamma Mia 1 & 2, since those movies are clearly musicals. Let’s also leave out dance movies like Footloose, Flash Dance, Dirty Dancing, etc.

I made a notation where the music is Diegetic (a case where the music is played within the storyline, where characters actually hear the music themselves).

I’m going to get a list started here. Enjoy the videos, and good luck getting these awesome earworms out of your head.

  • Angel of the Morning – Deadpool (Total earworm bait)
        • Immigrant Song – Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers Infinity War (The lyrics from Led Zeppelin are so perfect, they reprised it thrice! Here is each scene, in order)

  • Sabotage – Star Trek 2009 (Young Kirk, stealing his dad’s car — Diegetic — I can’t believe I missed adding this one yesterday,as it’s the best character introduction EVER)
  • Sabotage is even reprised in Star Trek Beyond (Diegetic)
  • And Star Trek Beyond goes even further with Fight the Power (yes, Diegetic too)
    • Dreamweaver – Wayne’s World (Inappropriate perfection)
    • Bohemian Rhapsody – Wayne’s World (Diegetic)

        • The entire playlists of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vols 1 & 2 (Diegetic)

        • Avengers Infinity War – The Rubber Band Man (Diegetic, and used for the introduction of the aforementioned Guardians)

      • Come Together – Justice League ( think this was only used in the trailer, but it works)
      • The entire playlist of Pulp Fiction (Some of it is Diegetic)
      • Back in the Saddle Again – RED (Perfect choice)

    • Radioactive – The Host (End credits)
    • Avengers 1 – Shoot to Thrill (Diegetic, when Iron Man hijacks the speakers of the Quinjet)

        • Iron Man 1 – Back In Black (Diegetic in the cold open Army Hummer)

    • Iron Man 1  – Iron Man, (Closing credits)

    • Iron Man 2 – Shoot to Thrill, complete song (Diegetic, at Iron Man’s Expo)

  • Iron Man  3 – Can You Dig It? (End credits sequence)
  • Don’t Stop Me Now – Shaun of the Dead (Diegetic, on the jukebox: “Kill the Queen!”)

  • X-Men: Days of Future’s Past – Time in a Bottle  (Quicksilver’s Sequence)
    • X-Men: Apocalypse – Sweet Dreams are Made of This (Quicksilver, again)

        • Oh Yeah Great uses in two songs! – Risky Business and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

    • Risky Business also has Old Time Rock and Roll (Diegetic)

    • Don’t You Forget About Me – The Breakfast Club

    • Ghostbusters  -In the original Ghostbusters
    • AXL F  – Beverly Hills Cop

      • Ruthless People  – Opening credits of Ruthless People

    • Caddyshack – I’m All Right (Gopher opening sequence)

I’m going to wrap this  up and work on other things now. This list could probably go on for the length of a book. So…tell me what egregious misses I made. I’ll add to the list and give you the credit.

Did Rami Malek Sing In Bohemian Rhapsody?

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury
Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury

If you’ve seen Bohemian Rhapsody, you may be wondering if you’re hearing Rami Malek’s voice during the musical numbers. The answer is a little bit “yes” and a little bit “no.” As amazing as Malek’s voice is, we’re talking about duplicating Freddie Mercury here. No small feat. There’s no shame in being one of a chorus of voices needed to recreate the masterful range of Mercury.

In an interview with Metro USA, Malek confirmed he did sing some of the songs. Malek said, “It is an amalgamation of a few voices. But predominantly, it is my hope and the hope of everyone that we will hear as much Freddie as possible.”

The mixed vocal doesn’t feature on the film’s soundtrack, which is solely of original Queen recordings.
