Tomorrowland – movie review

tomorrowlandGrade: C+

I found Tomorrowland visually stunning, however the plot was convoluted especially for the younger set and was about 45 minutes longer than it needed to be.

Parents can be comfortable in taking the children to see this movie. There are several good role models and the violence is kept to a minimum.

Tomorrowland does attempt to send a message to the audience about our earth and the need to care for it now, but the message became a bit verbose. I wondered how Disney was able to land George Cloony for the lead role. After seeing the movie I believe George found Tomorrowland the perfect platform for doing the thing he does best — trying to save the world.

D-Train – movie review

d-traine Grade: B

The D Train was not at all what I was expecting. When I saw Jack Black was starring, I assumed it was going to be a raw comedy. There was comedy but there is also a darker side that showcases the downward spiral of one man’s obsession.

There is one scene in particular that my jaw dropped to the floor. I didn’t see where the movie was going and when it went there, it went! I can honestly say they had my attention at that point.

Jack Black did a great job. His character went through some major development. It is his story and he told it really well.

James Marsden was awesome to look at as usual. The character he played was a perfect fit for him.

All in all, the movie impressed me and made me respect Jack Black just a little bit more. If you’re looking for a dark comedy, look no further than The D Train.

Mad Max: Fury Road – movie review

mad-maxGrade: B

The movie starts with frenetic action and pauses only momentarily to take a breath before launching into the next epic action/chase/fight scene. If that’s what you want then you won’t be disappointed. After the Thursday opening night the user rating for this movie at Rottentomatoes stands tall at 94%. Obviously the fans of this genre are immensely satisfied.

There is next to zero story development. Even after 30 minutes into the movie it’s still a mystery as to why one group of people is running from another. On the plus side: it’s hard to have plot holes when there’s almost no plot.

The acting was a strong point — in the few scenes where it was required. I was particularly impressed with Charlize Theron. There really isn’t much to Tom Hardy’s character. All of his lines of dialog added together would fit on the back of a postage stamp. (This movie isn’t high on talking.)

My biggest gripe would be that due to the complete lack of character development I never really cared what happened to any of them.

I didn’t see it in 3D but I would hazard to guess that it would make a good 3D experience due to the almost none stop action. So far the RunPee users would agree. 88% suggest that the 3D version is worth the extra coin to see — with only 16 votes cast thus far.

True Story – movie review

true-storyGrade: A

I was super excited to see this movie. I had been wondering how James Franco and Jonah Hill could pull of a dramatic role. They both left me in awe. I’m not sure which one impressed me more.

The movie revolved around the growth of Franco and Hill’s “relationship”. The way that they played off each other, and the unfolding of an interesting story was appealing to the eye. They made you speechless while still giving you everything you needed to figure it out, just on the sly.

I recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of either actor. I loved every aspect of True Story, and I honestly hope you do too.

Unfriended – movie review

unfriendedGrade: F

Unfriended made me furious, I actually felt my blood pressure rising. There was not one redeeming quality about the movie. The ending was atrocious, with absolutely no wrap up. The entire premise was annoying.

If acting was a thing in this movie, they all forgot how to do it. Usually you have one to two people you root for in a movie; not this one; not even a little. I actually wanted them all to perish.

My warning to all our followers out there is this: DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

FYI, the audience score at RottenTomatoes is 50% — meaning half the people who see this movie agree with me.

Avengers: Age of Ultron – movie review

AvengersAgeofUltronGrade: A

Avengers: Age of Ultron has some great action. (Okay, it has LOTS of great action.) But what I like the most about the movie is that each character is so well defined and acts accordingly. I’ve seen enough movies where characters make decisions based on moving the plot to a predefined point instead of doing what their characters would naturally do. I think this is a tribute to Joss Whedon (writer/director) and the actors.

The story moves forward at a good pace and never seems to languish. Most importantly it’s easy to follow. The only aspect of the story that seemed a little contrived was Thor’s vision involving the Infinity Stones. I think that was one of those scenes where the writer (Joss) needed the character (Thor) to know something he couldn’t otherwise know and so planted this vision. This only stands out because everything else flowed so smoothly.

Spoilers below.

My absolute favorite part of the movie is the introduction of Vision, played by Paul Bettany — one of my favorite actors. I’m looking forward to a lot more from this character who brings a majestic serenity to the Avengers team that was missing. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

It Follows – movie review

it-followsGrade: C

Let me start by saying I’ve read fantastic reviews about It Follows, saying it’s the scariest movie of 2015. What I wonder is, what in the world were they thinking? Was the last horror movie they saw back in the 70’s? The movie drug on so slowly and there was absolutely no mystery. You pretty much know everything in the first 15 minutes, wheres the fun in that?

I will say that the acting was done well. They worked together nicely, it was just the movie that was seriously lacking. In all honesty I jumped more in the 4 minute preview to Insidious: Chapter 3 than I did in this whole movie. I read trivia saying the director got the idea for It Follows from a recurring nightmare he had. He probably should have left that as a nightmare.

If you’re a serious horror fanatic, I don’t recommend this movie to you because you’ll be bored to tears. If horror movies really scare you, than maybe this one is for you. I hope it does something for someone out there, because it just didn’t meet my high standards.

The Woman in Gold – movie review

woman-in-goldGrade: B+

The Woman In Gold is a wonderful venue for Helen Mirren to shine and for Ryan Reynolds to show us that he’s more than just a pretty face.

Reynolds dug deep and showed us another layer of his acting skills as Randol Schoenberg, the young attorney who took on the entire government of Austria and won in the American courts.

I don’t think this movie is for everyone. If you like to see justice prevail under insurmountable odds you’ll enjoy Woman Of Gold.

Thinking about seeing Avengers: Age of Ultron in 3D?

Here’s some info that might help you decide.

You may know that RunPee app users can vote to recommend the 3D version of a movie, or not. (This feature was added in the Fall of 2014.) Since Avengers is already out in some countries we have a decent bank of votes for it. Out of 44 votes 70% of people recommend the 3D version of the movie. However, that’s not a great number compared to other movies. Here’s to total breakdown:

Yes No Title
88% 12% Guardians Of The Galaxy
86% 14% Jupiter Ascending
85% 15% Home
79% 21% Big Hero 6
77% 23% The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies
75% 25% Spongebob Squarepants 2
70% 30% Avengers: Age of Ultron

57% 43% Exodus: Gods And Kings
57% 43% The Penguins Of Madagascar
55% 45% Insurgent
39% 61% Seventh Son

You can see there are two groupings of votes. Those at 70% and above and those that are below 60%. Avengers is at the bottom of the first group. Maybe this will help if you were on the fence about seeing it in 3D or not.

Personally, I avoid 3D unless it looks really awesome — like Avatar. I’m going to see Avengers Friday in IMAX 2D.

If you see it in 3D try to remember to scroll to the bottom of the Peetime screen and submit your vote.
